DANVILLE ?X The Danville District 118 School Board is expected to discuss the status of the former Douglas Elementary School Wednesday night, but board members are not expected to be in a hurry to decide its fate.
?§We are interested in a land swap with the city, but that isn?¦t going to happen, at least not right now,?? Superintendent Nanette Mellen said.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the Douglas site might become the site of a residential development for a special-needs group. The unnamed party behind the development was interested only in the property and not the boarded-up building that has been vacant since May 2002.
The Danville District 118 School Board will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Jackson Building, 516 N. Jackson St.
Mellen said District 118 was approached by Vickie Stewart, president and CEO of Vermilion Advantage, about the use of the site. District 118 was working with the city on a possible swap, which called for District 118 to give the city the Douglas site in exchange for some land near Danville High School.
Those plans apparently have been dropped.
Mayor Scott Eisenhauer, who attended Douglas School in the ??70s, declined to comment on the status of the plans for the site.
?§We are undecided what use this (location could have),?? Eisenhauer said. ?§If they choose to give us the land, we will accept it. There is no swap involved.??
Mellen had estimated that it would cost $250,000 to demolish the three-story, 90-year-old building.
In other business, board members:
?X Will hear a report from Brenda Demos, hot lunch director, on the inspection of kitchens. All kitchens had 100 percent ratings except for South View Middle School, which had minor infractions.
?X Will consider a policy which requires all juniors to take the Prairie State Achievement Exam.
?X Will hear a recommendation to keep the tax levy the same as last year. The tax rate would remain at $4.3932 per $100 assessed valuation. A homeowner with a house valued at $60,000 would pay $878 in taxes to the school district.
?X Will consider making the Illinois School District Liquid Asset Fund Plus as an additional depository for school funds for the district.
?X May award a contract for roof repairs at Edison Elementary School.
?X Will approve the appointments of family council members for schools in the district.
?X Will get an update on the community all-weather track from George Schildt, director of buildings and grounds.?n
