DANVILLE - For Danville Public Library Audiovisual Director and Webmaster Mike Boedicker, making a low-budget feature film this spring will be a longtime dream come true.
"I've had an interest in filmmaking since I was a kid," Boedicker said.
Boedicker was a broadcast major in college and has written six feature-length screenplays and completed short films and videos, but this will be the first time he's shot a feature-length film.
The drama "Show" will be filmed in Danville during nine weekends in April and May.
The film's script is on its seventh draft. Brian Wilson, a librarian and playwright living in Chicago, also collaborated on the screenplay.
The first script was written more than 10 years ago. It was originally 30 pages, but was expanded into a feature-length script, Boedicker said.
The drama originally was called "Voyeur" and set on a college campus. However, Boedicker said a community theater setting offers for a wider range of ages.
The Kathryn Randolph Theater, 601 N. Vermilion St., will serve as a backdrop for "Show."
"It's a drama with some thriller elements," Boedicker said.
He said the film is about a close-knit theater group whose relationships are tested when the stranger hired to videotape their latest show insinuates himself into their lives.
The film will feature six main characters, nine supporting roles, five bit parts and 10-15 extras.
Roles are available for five males age 20's to 40's; four females age 20's to 50's; one female age 50's to 60's and five males age 40's to 60's.
Crew members also are being sought.
Ten years ago, it would have cost Boedicker about $25,000 to shoot the drama on film, so he shelved the project.
Now, however, Boedicker can shoot "Show" on mini digital videotape, with editing and post production performed on a nonlinear computer editing system, for a fraction of that cost.
"I looked at (doing the film) a year ago again. Technology is allowing us to proceed," he said
He said he'll be able to do many takes on scenes and people's time will amount for the largest expense.
Cast and crew will not be paid.
"It's become an obsession. I just recently got excited about it again," Boedicker said.
Many scenes will be shot at the Katherine Randolph Theater, home of the Red Mask Players, in addition to Boedicker's house and other homes.
"It's very much a character-driven story," he said.
The film is being produced and directed by Boedicker and his wife Leslie, who has bachelor's and master's degrees in theater.
"I'll concentrate more on the technical end of directing," he said, adding that Leslie will focus on directing the actors.
Leslie said directing actors has been a part of her life for some time.
She also loves acting.
"I'm much more of a stage performer," she said, adding that she's also done film in the past. "I prefer live theater. It's instant gratification."
"He needs to have his dream. He's done some shorts and has done some really nice work," she added. "I'm really looking forward to it."
In addition to producing and directing, Leslie and Mike will have bit parts in the film.
